Facebook’s Instant Articles — the format that displays publishers’ content in a faster-loading, distraction-free view when accessed by Facebook users on mobile devices — are about to get more interactive. The social network announced today that these articles will now support 360 videos and photos — meaning, publishers can include 360 content in-line, which users can then navigate by turning their mobile device, or tapping and dragging.
Facebook will allow journalists and other content creators to include 360 videos and photos directly in their Instant Articles as inline content. When a user sees the media in the story, they can immediately begin interacting with the photo or video by tilting, clicking or dragging.
Thanks to four incredible, dedicated sherpas, we can now ‘climb’ to the top of the tallest mountain on Earth from the comfort of the nearest recliner.
The incredible feat was part of mountaineering equipment maker Mammut’s #Project360, an ambitious project that pairs expert mountaineers with tough 360° camera rigs and sends them on some of the most iconic mountain climbing expeditions on Earth.
Today’s achievement is a massive milestone for the project in particular and virtual mountaineering in general: four Nepalese mountain guides working with Project360 have become the first men in the world to document the whole South route to the summit of Mount Everest with a 360° camera rig.
From basecamp all the way to the summit the cameras kept on shooting, and all those photographs have been stitched together into an interactive journey that you and I can take on from the comfort of our own homes.

Today Facebook posted in it’s 360 Video Blog that it has acquired Two Big Ears, a spatial audio technology company, for an undisclosed sum.
Now part of Facebook, Two Big Ears’ Spatial Workstation has been repackaged and rebranded as the free “Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation.” Two Big Ears says support for its paid licenses will be wound down in the next 12 months.

Starting today, our pipeline for cinematic VR and 360 video, including the authoring tools, encoder and rendering engine are available for free via download below. We’re excited to be able to continue developing great tools for a larger number of people across the world. 3Dception for Games will no longer be a separate product but we will be working with the Oculus team to combine our expertise and create best in class VR audio. Existing Pro customers will continue to receive support in accordance with your current agreement for the next 12 months.
This brings new audio expertise to Facebook and Oculus, but according to Two Big Ears, the audio toolkit “will continue to be platform and device agnostic” — and support for Windows is apparently still on the way.
